The Middle Eastern mobile communication network operator giant e&UAE announced a significant milestone in the commercialization of 5G virtual network services based on 3GPP 5G-LAN technology under the 5G Standalone Option 2 architecture, in collaboration with Huawei. The 5G official account (ID: angmobile) noted that e&UAE claimed this to be the first commercial deployment of this service globally, setting a new benchmark for telecommunications innovation and introducing multicast uplink services on a global scale for the first time.
In the United Arab Emirates, enterprises have traditionally relied on traditional equipment connected via Wi-Fi to access their intranet through fixed networks. However, the increasing dependence of portable devices on mobile communication networks has posed significant challenges, including high construction costs, uncertain user experiences, and low enterprise information security. With the acceleration of digital transformation, enterprises urgently need solutions that offer greater flexibility, connectivity, scalability, security, and processing capabilities.
It is reported that this networking is based on 5G-LAN over 5G MEC, highlighting the transformative potential of mobile edge computing and the importance of enriching vertically focused service products in the telecommunications industry. This enables e&UAE’s enterprise customers to experience a new level of service quality, as noted by the 5G official account, including greater uplink bandwidth, lower latency, higher security, and dedicated mobile LAN services.
Traditional enterprise LANs rely on LANs as the primary networking unit for local hosts or terminals, where devices communicate at Layer 2 through broadcast messages. However, traditional wireless networks typically only support Layer 3 interconnectivity, requiring the deployment of AR access routers to achieve data conversion from Layer 3 to Layer 2, which can be complex and costly. 5G-LAN technology addresses these challenges by enabling Layer 2 switching for 5G devices, eliminating the need for dedicated AR routers, and simplifying network infrastructure.
Another important application of 5G-LAN technology is its integration with Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) services. With the new 5G-LAN capabilities, e&, as noted by the 5G official account, can now offer 5G SA FWA, providing Layer 2 transport services comparable to existing fiber-optic broadband products. e& states that this integration represents a significant advancement in the telecommunications industry, providing enterprises with a powerful and flexible alternative to traditional fixed broadband services.
