The future looks bright for 5G-A.

Recently, under the organization of the IMT-2020 (5G) Promotion Group, Huawei has first verified the capabilities of micro-deformation and marine vessel perception monitoring based on 5G-A communication and sensing convergence technology. By adopting 4.9GHz frequency band and AAU sensing technology, Huawei tested the base station’s ability to perceive tiny object movements. This validation by Huawei extended the traditional low-altitude and road perception capabilities to marine scenarios.

At the same time, under the organization of the IMT-2020 (5G) Promotion Group, ZTE has also completed the demonstration and verification test of 5G-A communication and sensing convergence, covering various typical application scenarios such as drones, transportation, intrusion detection, and breath detection.

5G-A is considered a key stage for 5G evolution towards 6G, also known as 5.5G. Communication and sensing convergence is one of the important innovative directions of 5G-A. Compared with 5G, 5G-A will bring many significant performance improvements. Its transmission speed is expected to increase by more than 10 times, reaching 100Gbps, to meet application requirements of higher demand. At the same time, the latency of 5G-A will be further reduced to 0.1ms or below. In addition, 5G-A will also have higher reliability and better coverage to meet the needs of various harsh communication environments.

The focus of communication and sensing convergence technology application in 5G-A is to shift from defining demands and scenarios to innovating business contents. Currently, the IMT-2020 (5G) Promotion Group has fully tested 5G-A communication and sensing convergence scenarios, network architectures, air interface technologies, and attempted to create smart networks and new applications of communication and sensing convergence by leveraging perception to assist communication network management in transportation, low altitude, and living scenarios.

With the development of 5G-A, domestic mainstream equipment manufacturers, chip manufacturers and other industry players have made important progress in key evolution directions such as 10Gbps downlink, mmWave, lightweight 5G (RedCap), and communication & sensing convergence. Multiple mainstream terminal chip manufacturers have released 5G-A chips. Various 5G-A pilot projects like naked eye 3D, IoT, connected vehicles, low altitude, etc. have been launched in Beijing, Zhejiang, Shanghai, Guangdong and other places.

From a global perspective, operators in countries around the world are actively engaged in 5G-A innovation practices. In addition to China, over 20 operators in Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, UAE, Spain, France and other countries are conducting verification of key 5G-A technologies.

It can be said that the arrival of the 5G-A network era has formed a consensus in the industry as a necessary path for 5G network upgrade and evolution.
